Our bodies are teeming with bacteria. We carry 1,000 times more of them than the cells in our bodies and they’re found on almost every surface of our skin and in every organ—from your mouth to your bladder. They’re also inside us: in our gut, lungs, teeth and even on our tongues!
These microbes have been called “our second genome” because they have an enormous impact on how we function at a cellular level. We've all been there. You're enjoying a delicious meal when suddenly you feel ill. Your stomach starts churning, your head starts to spin, and on top of all, there's no toilet in sight. Food poisoning is a common condition that causes symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea after eating food or drinking water. The food or drink contains bacteria or toxins that your body isn't used to dealing with. It usually happens when you don't wash your hands after using the bathroom or eating raw meat products such as chicken or beef. Foods that are most likely to cause food poisoning include fish; shellfish; cheese made from unpasteurized milk; meat/poultry kept at room temperature for over two hours before cooking; eggs kept at room temperature for over twenty-four hours before cooking them (or even longer if they were refrigerated).
