Back-to-school time is around the corner and for many parents, this can be a fun but overwhelming time. When establishing a new schedule and routine, we may have to sacrifice some priorities over others, gut health should never be that sacrifice.

That's why we are here today to give you our tips, tricks and easy gut-friendly lunch ideas to help you this back to school season.

The Importance of Maintaining a Healthy Gut

As studies on gut health and its affect on the rest of our well-being grow, we are discovering how essential it is to take care of our guts. Gut health can affect:

  • The immune system
  • Brain function
  • Memory
  • Energy levels
  • Sleep quality
  • Our mood
  • & so much more

By disregarding our gut health, we can find ourselves facing the consequences in many other ways - as listed above. It's no surprise that proper immunity, cognitive function and sleep are key to surviving the school year.

Tips to boost gut health for kids

Starting the day with breakfast, it's important that kids feel nourished and energized until their next meal. A healthy mix of prebiotic and probiotic fibre will do just the trick. this can include kefir with granola and fruits, or easy overnight oats with mixed berries and seeds.

Adding supplements to their morning routine can also help to ensure they have the nutrients, vitamins and healthy bacteria that they need for proper brain and gut health, as well as help boost their immune system. Our CDZ which includes vitamin C, vitamin D, Zinc and probiotics is the perfect 4-in-1 supplement that can be used to ensure all these needs are met.

Avoid adding processed or packaged snacks in their lunch. Though their favourite chocolate granola bar isn't going to destroy their guts, you are what you eat the majority of the time. It's a good idea to follow the 80/20 rule when packing a school lunch. 80% whole foods, 20% packaged snacks. It's important for a child to feel their best when absorbing so much new information every single day. We will list a few of our favourite healthy snack and lunch ideas below.

Gut-friendly lunch/snack ideas

Our guts thrive off a variety of whole foods as bacteria love to eat from a range of different plant fibres. This is why variety in their lunchbox is key. Listed below are a few easy, gut-friendly snack ideas to help your child thrive throughout their school day:

  • Veggie sticks and homemade guacamole or hummus
  • Roasted chickpeas with flavour of choice
  • Fruit salad with low sugar yoghurt dip
  • Whole-grain crackers and almond butter
  • Cooked edamame beans
  • Pita bread stuffed with falafel, tzatziki and vegetables
